Every buying guide on WhetGuide follows the same process, so you can judge our recommendations for yourself.
1. Start with the job, not the product
We begin each guide with what you're trying to do and the constraints that matter: budget, skill level, space, and how often you'll use it. That decides which specifications matter for that guide.
2. Build the candidate list from real demand
We pull the products people are actually buying in the category, using Amazon's "bought in the past month" figures, best-seller ranks and rating counts. A product with thousands of ratings and steady sales has a long track record. A brand-new listing with a handful of perfect reviews doesn't, yet.
3. Verify every specification at the source
We never quote a spec from memory. Specifications come from manufacturer specifications (grits, angles, abrasive types), Amazon sales and rating data, and the sharpening guidance knife makers publish for their own steels. If a feature isn't confirmed by the manufacturer, our comparison tables say "check listing" rather than guess.
4. Rank by fit, then say who should skip it
Picks are ranked by how well they fit the job, not by price or commission. Every product card includes a "think twice if" section: the situations where it's the wrong choice.
How we label reviews
Pages labeled How we pick are research-based: we compare specifications, manufacturer instructions and long-term owner feedback. We'll say clearly when a recommendation comes from hands-on sharpening.
Prices
Prices change daily, so we don't print them unless we checked them that day. Our "Check price on Amazon" buttons show the current price.
Corrections and updates
Each guide shows its last-updated date. When a product is discontinued, a spec changes or a better option appears, we update the guide. If you spot an error, tell us and we'll fix it.
